“Inquirer” Interview

Penshoppe made the big announcement on Twitter: “THIS IS NOT A DRILL: @zaynmalik is back on #TeamPenshoppe!”

The brand unveiled its Spring/Summer campaign featuring Zayn Malik earlier this month, to the delight of his many fans. The campaign was shot by photographer Nabil Elderkin.

The now solo artist first joined Team Penshoppe back in 2012 along with the rest of One Direction. We met Zayn during their campaign shoot for Penshoppe in London. Zayn told us then, “We realized on Twitter that we have quite a big following in the Philippines and that we got a lot of fans there so we thought it would be cool to do something that the fans in the Philippines will see.”

Penshoppe brand director Jeff Bascon said, “We’re excited to have Zayn back in the Penshoppe family. Working with Zayn was just amazing. To have him back in Penshoppe is really special. We wanted the shoot to feel natural and that the look and feel will embody his sense of style. His stylist Jason Rembert made the collaboration so easy. It was one of my favorite shoots, so easy and fun.”

Super caught up with Zayn in this e-mail interview and talked about his music, his tattoos and all things fashion.

You were a Penshoppe ambassador back when you were with One Direction, what made you say yes again to Penshoppe?

I really like the brand and what Penshoppe is about in terms of clothing.

In the past you said that you guys said yes to Penshoppe as a way to get closer to your fans in the Philippines, how is your relationship with your Filipino fans? Do you feel their presence strongly on social media?

Absolutely, the fans are amazing, I read all of the messages and comments they leave… and I love the fan art! Can’t wait to see them soon.

How was the shoot?

The shoot was really fun, I loved putting the looks together and it all felt very natural to me.

Which pieces from the collection did you like the most?

I think my favourite pieces are the yellow jumper and the ripped jeans—but I also love the pairing of the mustard jacket with the orange striped shirt.

Congratulations on winning GQ Best Dressed for a second year in a row. How would you describe your sense of style?

Thank you. They have shown me so much support. My sense of style is very natural to me, I love clothes which have a little edge to them too.

How much has it changed over the years and what has changed about it?

When I was a teenager, the trends at the time in Bradford were very sportswear heavy and I think there’s a degree of that style which has stayed with me, and I have always tried new things.

What would you consider your wardrobe essentials?

Classic black boots and a cool leather jacket.

Is there anything you wouldn’t wear?

Never say never…

What has been your most surreal/unforgettable/favorite fashion moment?

Going to the Met Gala with Versace in metal arms was a lot of fun.

How’s the new album coming along?

I am so buzzing for my new music, I’m so excited for people to hear it. I think some elements of the music will surprise people although it’s all a very clear evolution of my sound from Mind of Mine.

What inspires your music?

It’s hard to pinpoint an exact inspiration as I feel like the most random thing can spark a melody or idea for a track.

How has going solo changed your creative process?

I’m in control of my sound, so everything is more true to me as an individual.

You’ve worked with Sia, Taylor Swift and Timbaland—who else do you want to collaborate with?

There are a few people who I am working with on this album, which I’ll keep a secret for now.

What else can fans expect from you?

I’m excited to play with this album visually and make some killer videos.

You told us before that you are passionate about art—is it still something that’s important to you? Do you still have time to paint and draw?

Absolutely, it’s important for me to take the time to be creative every day and I love doing it.

Which of your tattoos are your favorite and why?

My favorite changes every day, but right now I am loving my new chakra tattoos.

Who are your favorite tattoo artists?

I’m working with Megan Massacre a lot at the moment, she’s really dope, really talented.

Are you still gardening a lot?

Yes, I love it!

What else are you passionate about?

My friends and family are hugely important to me, I wouldn’t be here without them.

What causes do you feel strongly about?

There are so many, but I have to say that the common thread of them all is justice. No one should be disrespected, undervalued or underappreciated in our world. We have to stand up for one another.

What else are you busy with now?

My music is consuming my life at the moment and I am so grateful that I get to do this every day.

How do you relax? What do you do for fun?

The studio is my haven. Making and playing music is everything to me and I spend my days and nights in the studio.

What are the five things you can’t live without?

Music, family, friends, art, fans.

Do you ever Google yourself?

I don’t. But I do read the messages and comments from my fans on social media, their support and feedback is sick.

What else do you want to do that you haven’t done before?

I want to learn how to play the saxophone this year.

What’s the best thing about the Zquad?

Zquad is so creative, I love seeing the drawings, covers, poems and songs which they write.

Does your Penshoppe campaign mean we might get to see you in the Philippines?

I would love to come. Soon.

“STATUS Magazine” Interview

They say that all the world’s a stage, but this multi-talented artist isn’t just a mere player with one liners to give. Beyond the lights, fan girls and rounds of applause is seizing the moment, and that’s what made musician ZAYN MALIK dominate the scene. From crooning pillow talks with a dark gaze that ain’t just there to sit pretty, he looks to a brighter future ahead and moves the only direction he knows – forward. “If you feel like there’s something in your life that’s unfulfilled, just go for it. Life’s too short,” he shares, and that’s exactly what he continues to do.

Wandering across the spectrum of dark pop sensibilities, Zayn Malik drives from dusk till dawn with a determination that never seems to run out of fuel. Gassed up with emotional power and a moody, piano-driven snippets of his love notes, he continues to create tracks that reach people beyond Billboard’s top list. “My music is constantly evolving – at present I wanna make sure my sound is unique to me. It’s a constant journey,” he continues, “I use music as an outlet to express myself and my emotions, so I suppose a side I speak about less comes across. Equally, I love making music that’s fun and feel good.” Caught under surveillance, the world continues to anticipate the ghost of his next beat, but he learned to tune out the background noise and focus on his own voice, and it says, “I make music that I want to listen to.”

From the grunge backstages of his concerts to coming clean for the glossy pages of fashion magazines, Zayn doesn’t like to stay rooted as he sees opportunity in different highways. #OOTD may be dead, but the musician is known to put the muse in music, and he wears his passion on his sleeve no matter what time of day. “I always want to discover cutting-edge trends fashion but I try and remember classic styles and cuts – I’m inspired by fashion from all ages.” Speaking of cutting-edge trends, take a cold swig on this news: Zayn Malik is back with PENSHOPPE to keep things cool with their new S/S 2018 collection, and it’s bringing the heat down.

From designing to creating music, have you ever thought of trying your hand in acting?

Z: Definitely, film is a huge passion of mine and I would like to explore it more in the future.

Dusk Till Dawn with Sia already felt like watching a short film. What are the kind of films that you would like to be a part of?

Z: I’m a massive fan of the classics, I love the Marvel series and I love Bollywood.

Your collaboration with Sia was definitely a surprise in terms of sound direction – how do you manage to meet other artists half-way when creating music together?

Z: Sia was awesome to work with – I love to collaborate. My material can only benefit from different ideas and perspectives.

Are you working on any new music at the moment?

Z: I’m in the final stages of my second album but I am always working on new material.

What’s the best thing to do when you want to relax and unwind from music? Walk us through it.

Z: I love spending time with my family and friends – catching up with what they’ve been up to. I love comic books, watching films, skating and cooking.

Your music is known to be mysterious and broody. Would you say that your art is different from the artist?

Z: I think finding the light and the dark in life and work is something I’ve always done and that does reflect myself as a person. I am quiet and I do like to be reflective but I can also bounce around and be the loudest person in a room. It’s just a balance.

What’s a sound that is completely out of your comfort zone, but have always wanted to try?

Z: I have a lot of respect for blues and jazz musicians.

We know all about your musical inspirations, but we also know there’s a pressure in being one. How do you stay true to yourself and to your fans?

Z: I try to stay humble and remember that there’s always lots to learn from the artists who continue to inspire me.

As a creative person, what is your permanent goal?

Z: To keep creating in all different fields – making art that is provocative, exciting and dynamic.

Any future collaborations you’re looking to tap?

Z: Collaborating with other people is always really interesting and I love bouncing off the energy of another person. There are loads of people I’d love to work with.

“Penshoppe” Interview

Earlier this month, global retail giant Penshoppe unveiled singer and international heartthrob Zayn Malik as the newest face of their Spring/Summer 2018 campaign. Joining other Penshoppe endorsers Kaia Gerber, Joran Barrett, Nam Joo Hyuk, and Bella Hadid, the former One Direction star solidifies his stand as one of the most influential names in both music and fashion.

What makes him the perfect addition to #TeamPenshoppe? “Zayn is always at the cutting edge of trends and is never afraid to experiment,” says Brand Director Jeff Bascon. Sporting easy-to-wear pieces in statement-ready prints, playful stripes, striking colors, and plush textures, Zayn looks just about ready to celebrate summer in style.

What’s it like for you to work with a brand like Penshoppe?
It’s great and super humbling to collaborate with such a cool brand.

What is it about Penshoppe’s style that attracted you to work with the brand?
I like the urban elements in Penshoppe’s pieces.

Anything from the collection you’d like to take home?
All of it, please.

Can we expect to see you in the Philippines soon?
I’d love to come. Soon.

Speaking of clothes, what’s the signature Zayn Malik look?
I think I’m known for my love of jewellery and a bold leather jacket.

Who would you consider as your style icon?
I wouldn’t necessarily say I have a style icon for me in that I dress like him, but Prince had such an amazing way of putting things together like no one else.

From tattoos, to shaving your head, you seem like you’re game to try different things. But is there a kind of look that you wouldn’t ever try?
Never say never…

How has your style evolved since your beginnings in the industry?
I’m so lucky to have been invited to incredible fashion shows and taken part in amazing shoots which really help you define your style.

What influences your sartorial choices now?
I’m always finding inspiration from the people I meet and the cities I go to. I love mixing street style with high-end pieces.

What type of music did you listen to growing up and do they play a role in the kind of music you’re making now?
I was raised on Bollywood and R&B in my house and it definitely made me who I am today.

What’s been the most challenging part about putting out your own music?
I really want to make music my fans are going to love, which is honest, and music that I’d want to listen to myself.

Can you briefly describe your creative process, from writing songs to conceptualizing for the music videos?
I make every creative decision in my career which means that what my fans see is truly authentic to who I am. I’m always gathering images and links to things.

Any musical artists that you’re looking to collab with next?
There might be some good collaborations on this album…

Music, check. Fashion, check. Will we be seeing you on the big screen anytime soon?
I absolutely love film, which is one of the reasons my Dusk Til Dawn video was directed by Mark Webb – it’s definitely something I want to explore more of in the future. And I plan to.

You’ve already accomplished a lot at 24. But do you still have a dream you’ve yet to fulfill?
Of course, time will tell.
