“STATUS Magazine” Interview

They say that all the world’s a stage, but this multi-talented artist isn’t just a mere player with one liners to give. Beyond the lights, fan girls and rounds of applause is seizing the moment, and that’s what made musician ZAYN MALIK dominate the scene. From crooning pillow talks with a dark gaze that ain’t just there to sit pretty, he looks to a brighter future ahead and moves the only direction he knows – forward. “If you feel like there’s something in your life that’s unfulfilled, just go for it. Life’s too short,” he shares, and that’s exactly what he continues to do.

Wandering across the spectrum of dark pop sensibilities, Zayn Malik drives from dusk till dawn with a determination that never seems to run out of fuel. Gassed up with emotional power and a moody, piano-driven snippets of his love notes, he continues to create tracks that reach people beyond Billboard’s top list. “My music is constantly evolving – at present I wanna make sure my sound is unique to me. It’s a constant journey,” he continues, “I use music as an outlet to express myself and my emotions, so I suppose a side I speak about less comes across. Equally, I love making music that’s fun and feel good.” Caught under surveillance, the world continues to anticipate the ghost of his next beat, but he learned to tune out the background noise and focus on his own voice, and it says, “I make music that I want to listen to.”

From the grunge backstages of his concerts to coming clean for the glossy pages of fashion magazines, Zayn doesn’t like to stay rooted as he sees opportunity in different highways. #OOTD may be dead, but the musician is known to put the muse in music, and he wears his passion on his sleeve no matter what time of day. “I always want to discover cutting-edge trends fashion but I try and remember classic styles and cuts – I’m inspired by fashion from all ages.” Speaking of cutting-edge trends, take a cold swig on this news: Zayn Malik is back with PENSHOPPE to keep things cool with their new S/S 2018 collection, and it’s bringing the heat down.

From designing to creating music, have you ever thought of trying your hand in acting?

Z: Definitely, film is a huge passion of mine and I would like to explore it more in the future.

Dusk Till Dawn with Sia already felt like watching a short film. What are the kind of films that you would like to be a part of?

Z: I’m a massive fan of the classics, I love the Marvel series and I love Bollywood.

Your collaboration with Sia was definitely a surprise in terms of sound direction – how do you manage to meet other artists half-way when creating music together?

Z: Sia was awesome to work with – I love to collaborate. My material can only benefit from different ideas and perspectives.

Are you working on any new music at the moment?

Z: I’m in the final stages of my second album but I am always working on new material.

What’s the best thing to do when you want to relax and unwind from music? Walk us through it.

Z: I love spending time with my family and friends – catching up with what they’ve been up to. I love comic books, watching films, skating and cooking.

Your music is known to be mysterious and broody. Would you say that your art is different from the artist?

Z: I think finding the light and the dark in life and work is something I’ve always done and that does reflect myself as a person. I am quiet and I do like to be reflective but I can also bounce around and be the loudest person in a room. It’s just a balance.

What’s a sound that is completely out of your comfort zone, but have always wanted to try?

Z: I have a lot of respect for blues and jazz musicians.

We know all about your musical inspirations, but we also know there’s a pressure in being one. How do you stay true to yourself and to your fans?

Z: I try to stay humble and remember that there’s always lots to learn from the artists who continue to inspire me.

As a creative person, what is your permanent goal?

Z: To keep creating in all different fields – making art that is provocative, exciting and dynamic.

Any future collaborations you’re looking to tap?

Z: Collaborating with other people is always really interesting and I love bouncing off the energy of another person. There are loads of people I’d love to work with.
